Karen VanDam Michmerhuizen Featured Artist at the Postma Center Leep Art Gallery
Pine Rest welcomes artist Karen VanDam Michmerhuizen to the Bruce and Mary Leep Art Gallery at the Postma Center beginning on January 6, 2010. The gallery is located on the main campus of Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services at 300 68th Street.
VanDam Michmerhuizen’s display, titled “Mostly Michigan” is a compilation of pieces inspired by the beautiful Michigan coastline. She is a native of West Michigan. Her work has been on display at a number of venues in Spring Lake, Petoskey, and Douglas, Michigan.

“We are too busy living and doing to stop, take a second look, and enjoy. Putting these everyday views on canvas gives others a chance to see through the eyes of an artist. God has given me the gift of artistic ability, and to let others see the beauty of the ordinary is a privilege” says VanDam Michmerhuizen.

“Mostly Michigan” will run January 6, through April 6, 2010. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. through 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, additional times available by appointment. No admission fee. For more information, please call 616/222-4530.

In this session, participants will learn about the intersection between culture and language and social emotional development. Participants will also learn about specific strategies that will help early care providers facilitate the social and emotional development of young children from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Discussions will focus on the CSEFEL’s “Teaching Pyramid” that focuses primarily on supporting social and emotional development and preventing challenging behaviors of young children. Participants will engage in small and large group activities designed to raise awareness, learn specific strategies, and evaluate and reflect on their current practice.

1. Gain an understanding of the different ways children's behaviors are perceived and interpreted.

a. Describe behaviors children exhibit that may be misinterpreted as challenging but are in fact deemed acceptable by their families and communities.

b. Describe behaviors associated with specific developmental phases that children learning a new language typically go through.

2. Gain an understanding of how differing expectations at home and at center-based, early care programs can impact children's opportunities to learn.

3. Identify strategies designed to bridge center-based programs and home expectations of children's behaviors.
