Freedom House

A Stepping Stone for Women in Addiction Recovery

Freedom House is a transitional housing program located on Pine Rest’s main campus in Grand Rapids.  The program was started in 1995 and moved to its current location in 2006.

The program is designed to provide safe, sober and affordable housing for women recovering from substance use addictions.  The house is able to accommodate up to 10 women, as well as their young children.  Typical length of stay is a maximum of one year.

Freedom House provides opportunities for women to break addictive habits and transition into everyday society.  Residents of the home are required to attend at least three AA or NA meetings weekly.  In addition, counseling opportunities are available for residents within the home. Freedom House staff works with residents four hours each day, offering support and supervision necessary to help break addictive behavior.

Within three months of entering the program, residents are also required to be employed.  Staff closely monitors the resident’s process of finding and holding a job.  Past residents have found employment at McDonald’s, Woodland Mall, Goodwill Industries, area restaurants, and as home health aides and house cleaners.

Residents of Freedom House pay a monthly rent of $350.  Those with children are required to pay an additional $150 for their children.  Rent payments cover all utilities, local phone service, cable and all cleaning and household supplies.  Residents are also expected to contribute $150 a month for food.  This is in addition to rent costs.

All units within Freedom House are fully furnished and linens are provided as needed.  The home includes a television/living room with tables and chairs for socializing, a reading room with fireplace, full kitchen and laundry area.  Recreational activities at the house include foosball and pingpong tables and a backyard with a patio and a play-set for children.
