The Lord has blessed me with the opportunity to be raised in a Christian household, so I have known of Christ as long as I can remember. My relationship with Christ became personal when I was in middle school. At this time, the Holy Spirit began working in me, and I started to wrestle with the magnitude of my sin. I distinctly remember having distressing thoughts about life and death that kept me up at night. As I wrestled with this, I found great comfort in scripture. I read the book of Romans, finding consolation in verses such as “The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6: 23) and that when we are in Christ we cannot be separated from the love of God (Romans 8). This marked the beginning of my personal relationship with Christ, which has continued to form through adulthood. As I experienced challenges, I learned how finding my identify and belonging in Christ brought meaning to my life.
I believe I am called to combine my passion for helping people with my passion for Christ, which is what lead me to the field of social work. I attended Dordt College, which began to teach me how to integrate my faith into social work practice. People experience challenges in their life in a variety of components including biological, psychological, social, and spiritual. Therapy recognizes the strengths and challenges people have in each of these components, helping people identify healthy changes to address their challenges. I integrate my faith into every therapy session in ways that is comfortable for the client. My faith is the foundation for my practice, and this is reflected in my therapy. I also recognize each person is at a different place in their faith, and I welcome difference of opinions and questions about this in therapy. Respecting a client’s self-determination is key to successful therapy, and this includes integration of faith. I look forward to working with all clients on their journey to healing, helping find restoration in whatever biological, psychological, social, or spiritual difficulties they face.
