Living in Pella, Iowa

A unique and vibrant place to live, Pella is filled with charm and warmth that is unparalleled in other communities its size. Excellent schools, low crime rates, close proximity to Des Moines, low cost of living, quiet nature escapes, and abundance of employment opportunities add up to an excellent quality of life.

Pella residents truly care about making Pella a great place to live! People are very friendly and very involved in the community, and there are very active Parent Teacher Organizations, well-supported local sports, and many volunteer organizations.

Even though we are a small community, Pella has some big-city benefits. The health center and education systems rival that of larger communities. Both school systems are Blue Ribbon Schools with average ACT scores and graduation rates far exceeding state and national averages, athletic and music programs that are recognized statewide, and work hard to promote good character and parental involvement. Central College is a four-year liberal arts college known for its innovation and drawing multicultural and education events to the community.

Pella offers great options for shopping, an aquatic center, opera house, a movie and live theater, coffee shops, restaurants, city parks, cultural events, concerts, recreation leagues, volunteer organizations, museums, and so much more! A popular destination for immigrants from the Netherlands in the 1800’s, Pella’s population has nearly 45% Dutch ancestry, is known as America’s Dutch Treasure and celebrates that heritage with unique food, shopping, museums, the nation’s tallest working windmill, and an annual tulip festival which brings in over 150,000 guests.

Just minutes away is Lake Red Rock, Iowa’s largest lake which provides access to biking trails, fishing, boating, camping, hunting, and an abundance of nature and wildlife. With over 30,000 acres of marsh, bottomlands, timber and upland, the Red Rock public hunting area offers the best trophy deer hunting in the nation.

Pella has a strong manufacturing base with both Pella Corporation and Vermeer corporate headquarters located in the city. The other largest industries are agriculture, tourism and service.
