Pine Rest Therapist Spotlight

Amy VanDenToorn, LMSW

Amy VanDenToorn, LMSWA licensed social worker, Amy joined Pine Rest in 2008. She has provided therapy to a wide variety of clients throughout Pine Rest’s outpatient network as well as teletherapy. She recently served as clinic manager at the Northeast Clinic and currently is manager of Pine Rest’s largest clinic, the Campus Clinic.

What first attracted you to Pine Rest?

My ultimate goal was to work for an organization with a faith-based mission. Pine Rest is a great place to work and is driven by its mission. They value excellent clinical care and a collaborative approach. In addition, I was very impressed by the breadth of professional opportunities at Pine Rest.

What types of support and opportunities have been important to your career growth, happiness and success at Pine Rest?

I really appreciate the variety of specialties and projects at Pine Rest. I’ve had many opportunities to participate in program development, community based committees and robust training opportunities such as Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), perinatal mood disorders and other evidence-based treatments.

Because of our clinics’ extended hours, I have also been able to enjoy a lot of flexibility with my schedule. As a working parent, this flexibility has been priceless.

What have been some of your more rewarding accomplishments?

As a clinic manager, I’ve really valued working with our clinicians as well as my fellow clinic managers. The multidisciplinary and collegial approach at Pine Rest fosters a culture of collaboration where mentorship opportunities abound. Watching and guiding clinicians and staff grow in their careers has very gratifying.

As a clinician, I thrive on seeing patients making positive strides in treatment and regain their lives back. Also, I love trying out new methods in treatment to aid our patient’s recovery. Teletherapy intrigued me due to the increased access we can provide. While I offered teletherapy sessions to see if it would help my patients overcome barriers to treatment, what I discovered was that my patients enjoyed being able to attend a therapy session from the comfort of their home or at work during their lunch hour.”
